# PSD2 Terminology

| Term | Description |
| - | - |
| 3DS | 3 Domain Secure (generally just called 3D Secure) |
| 3DS challenge | The issuing bank has determined the customer must be redirected for further authentication |
| Directory Service | Payment Network supported service for BIN lookup of 3DS support at each issuing bank |
| EEA | European Economic Area (basically, Euro countries. Does not include UK.) |
| EMVco | A joint venture overseen by the six major card associations: American Express, Discover, JCB, Mastercard, UnionPay and Visa |
| Exemptions | Qualifications or data that the merchant can share with the issuer in hopes of avoiding a 3DS challenge for that transaction |
| PSD2 | Payment Services Directive 2nd generation (a mandate from the Payment Card Industry) |
| SCA | Strong Customer Authentication |
