# The PaymentMethod Object

The Retain PaymentMethod object represents an "on-file" payment instrument such as a credit card. Payment Methods are the means by which a customer pays for purchases or in other words the financial account which is debited for charges due from the customer.

The `PaymentMethod` object provides information about the payment method to use for processing failed transactions submitted to Vindicia Retain for recovery. This information is passed to Retain via the `[billTransactions](billTransactions)` or `[addPaymentMethods](addPaymentMethods)` methods.
